Where is orphaned mom Ruslana now?

May 10, 2024

In February of last year, we wrote about Ruslana, a mom from our Stop the Cycle program. Just as she faced big challenges, Last Bell helped her secure an apartment from the government.

But our relationship with Ruslana was just beginning.

Our staff believe in the healing power of long-term relationships and kept in touch. When Ruslana’s second child was born in early 2024, she came “home” from the hospital to our warm, welcoming Shelter facility.

During those crucial first weeks of the baby’s life, the Shelter offered a safe, supportive environment. Plus, Ruslana’s stay gave us a chance to help with other needs.

While she was visiting, Ruslana had a bad toothache. Our staff took her to the dentist; Masha (our photographer) watched the baby.

Then Ruslana started preparing for life with a sweet new baby.

She was eligible for government payments for her baby’s care. But she didn’t know how to get them. Staff member Yuliana helped her fill out the papers, empowering her to deal with government bureaucracy.

With her finances solidified, it was time to make Ruslana’s home ready!

Operations Director Andriy B. took measurements for new furniture. And Ruslana shared the need for new flooring and some kitchen supplies.

When moving day arrived in April, Last Bell’s enthusiastic community sprang in action!

Orphaned students moved the new furniture into Ruslana’s apartment. Then our Educational Outreach crew, themselves former orphans, skillfully installed it. Our staff organized and supervised.

Everyone came together to make sure Ruslana and her two little girls would thrive. And our youngest students got a glimpse of real friendship and care.

Because of your generosity, Ruslana can envision a bright future for her family. Thank you for helping her break the cycle!
