Waiting in hope with Anya
Sometimes, the orphaned youth we meet have no plans for the future.
And sometimes, they set goals and study hard. But because of their background, they still struggle to make connections and manage disappointments.
Anya lived in a good foster family when we met her in 2024. But she still carried pain and loss. At camp last year, she opened up about her childhood – how she “cried a lot” when she saw her classmates coming to school with their parents. She hadn’t seen her own parents since she was three years old. She also said she didn’t have any friends.
Just last month, Anya left foster care and began living in a dorm at her school. Our staff provide exactly what she needs: support as she transitions into independent life. After two and a half years of friendship, Anya trusts their guidance and advice.
Anya dreams of opening her own atelier (fashion studio). Last Bell helped pay for sewing courses, and in March, our staff set up a meeting with an atelier in Zhytomyr. The designer, Yulia, shared about the first steps and the challenges of starting her business. She planned to be in touch.

The conversation with Yulia has moved more slowly than we’d hoped. This is disappointing for Anya! But she’s not waiting alone. Our staff offer companionship and encouragement.
Katya T., the staff member who knows Anya best, writes, “This is truly so important for our students—to have people who support their dreams and aspirations. We don’t know what God has prepared for them in the future, but perhaps these small steps will help lead her to something that becomes her life’s work or simply a hobby she loves.”
Anya herself wrote this note to share with all of you:
“Last Bell became the place where I found genuine support, stability, and confidence in myself. It was through them that I gained faith in my abilities and the desire to keep growing. They helped me not only with words but also through their actions: they paid for my education, gave me the opportunity to attend camps, and opened new opportunities for my personal development.
“But what I value most is their sincere hearts. They supported me when they could have simply walked past. I am deeply grateful to the Last Bell team for everything they have done for me, and I am especially thankful to God for bringing these people into my life. Their support has become a strong foundation on which I continue to build my life.”

At camp last year, Anya gave her life to Jesus. She’s been attending the church pastored by our own Andriy Balanchuk. This time of waiting is also an opportunity for discipleship – learning at church and from our staff how to trust God as she waits for her bright future.
Thank you, friends, for placing Katya T. and our other staff in Anya’s life! Because of you, she’s launching her independent life with resilience and spiritual strength.
